Press Secretary edits transcript after DNC donors laugh at Obama’s job creation claims

On Monday night, President Obama gave a campaign speech at a Democratic National Committee fund raising event at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C.
During the speech, Obama boasted of his accomplishments, credited himself with turning around the economy, and predictably asked donors to “dig deep” to support his reelection campaign.
Of the many laugh lines in the speech, one caught the eye of political pundits on the web. Obama boasted that his administration had created 2.1 million private sector jobs. According to the White House transcript, the crowd responded with laughter.
It appears that even the biggest DNC donors are beginning to believe that Obama is becoming a caricature of himself.
Here is the text of the original transcript released to the press on June 20. Quoting the President: “Over the last 15 months we’ve created over 2.1 million private sector jobs. (Laughter.)”
New media outlets, such as the Drudge Report, jumped on this story to point out that this claim was so ridiculous that even his closest supporters thought it to be a joke. Obviously embarrassed that Obama’s political fodder is no longer accepted as fact, the Press Secretary’s office quickly and quietly edited the transcript of the President’s statement.
The amended transcript at whitehouse.gov now reads: “Over the last 15 months we’ve created over 2.1 million private sector jobs. (Applause.)”
This comes just days after Obama joked at a Job Council meeting that the “shovel ready” jobs created by the massive stimulus package never materialized as promised, because of government regulation.
Huffington Post reporter Jeff Benderay, who attended the event, was quick with an attempt to quell the controversy on Tuesday by saying, “It was just applause, really. I’m guessing the stenographer accidentally plugged in the parenthetical laughter instead of the parenthetical applause.”
Maybe it was just a typo. Without seeing video or hearing audio from the event, we may never know. If it was a typo, I’m guessing at least one White House employee was just added to the unemployment statistic.
If true, it is encouraging to see that the Obama charm is wearing thin, even with major DNC contributors. And it’s becoming clear to more and more Americans that we are the butt of the joke.
