ACT NOW TO REPEAL REAL ID IN FLORIDA

Last fall Senator Greg Evers proposed Senate Bill 220 the Florida Driver’s License Citizen Protection Act which would repeal the onerous and unconstitutional Federal Real ID act. Twenty-three other states have already passed laws opposing Real ID and eighteen more have similar bills in the works. Unfortunately, Senator Evers’ bill is now facing a silent death in the halls of the Florida Senate. Senator Evers is a lifelong champion of liberty and consistently sponsors bills that protect Floridians rights. Because of his firm stance on the issues, Senator Evers has refused to support legislation that would infringe on free enterprise or liberty and, as a result, other Senators have blackballed his legislation this session.

Without the help of Floridians all over the state Senate Bill 220 will never even make it to its first committee hearing and will expire unread and untouched. Immediate action is needed to stop this from happening. This is a chance for Floridians to help one of their legislators help them. Attached is a list of the key opponents of Senate Bill 220 (and the House version of the bill, HB109) and a sample letter to them. Print the letter out, sign it and mail it to the legislators on the list. It will take five minutes and cost about $2.00 but it will make a world of difference. Then call them, email them, and don’t stop.

A flood of voter support is the only thing that will save this bill and we can do it. Contact your representative as well and let them know that you support Senate Bill 220 and House Bill 109, the  Florida Driver’s License Citizen Protection Act, and that they should too.

HERE IS THE SAMPLE LETTER

Senator Haridopolos,

I am writing to tell you of my support for House Bill 109/Senate Bill 220, the Florida Driver’s License Citizen Protection Act, sponsored by Senator Evers and Representative Ahern. I believe that Floridians have a right to privacy in their personal documents as defined in the 4th Amendment of the United States Constitution: “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” And in Article I Section 12 of the Florida Constitution: “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures, and against the unreasonable interception of private communications by any means, shall not be violated.”

I believe, as Senator Evers, Representative Ahern, and many other Florida legislators do, that the Federal Real ID Act is unconstitutional and we are not alone in this. Twenty-three other states have already passed laws opposing Real ID and eighteen more are poised to pass similar laws. The Florida Driver’s License Citizen Protection Act is clearly a 10th Amendment bill and is historically and legally well within the power of the Florida Legislature to enact. The moral imperative that falls on you is even more clear. It is your duty as an elected representative of the citizens of Florida to follow the Constitution and to respond to the will of the people.

Floridians have spoken out against Real ID for several years now and the message is that we don’t want it. This is your chance to show us that our representatives can rise above the petty squabbling that seems so entrenched in our system and do what’s right for the people of Florida. If you allow HB 109/SB 220 to fail you will have failed your constituents and all of the citizens of Florida. I hope that you will join me in supporting this important legislation and I look forward to seeing these bills become law.

Sincerely,
